Are you interested in joining the massive global effort to improve public health, sexual and reproductive rights, women’s rights, maternal and child health, family planning and the environment? PAI offers a professional internship program, which engages interns with crucial issues and sharpens their career skills.
PAI's Internship Program
PAI's Internship Program offers both undergraduate and graduate internships at our Washington, DC office. Positions are offered in a variety of departments including: Research, International Advocacy, Executive Support, Resource Development, Communications, Information Technology, Information Resourcing, Special Projects and more! All interns are required to work 20 hours per week in our office and attend 2 external meetings of their choice.
Each intern will work with their supervisor to get the most out of their PAI experience. We encourage interns to present and report on work they are doing. Communication with PAI staff is encouraged.
The Internship Program is offered 3 terms:
- Fall Term (September 13th – November 19th )
- Spring Term (January 18th – April 9th)
- Summer Term (May 24th – July 30th)
All programs include an orientation day and luncheon.

Advocacy Intern
Background
An Administrative Support Intern is being sought by the Advocacy Department of Population Action International (PAI), an independent research and advocacy group working to strengthen support for international family planning. PAI strives to create a world in which every person has a right and access to sexual and reproductive health, humanity and the natural environment exist in balance, and fewer people live in poverty. This internship is ideal for someone pursuing an undergraduate degree with an interest in international policy and health.
Responsibilities
The Administrative Support Intern provides a wide range of administrative and logistical support to the International Advocacy and U.S. Government Relations team of a fast-pace department working to advance the issue of international reproductive health and family planning (RH/FP).
S/he reports to and works closely with the Advocacy coordinator to:
- Provide logistical support for internal/external meetings and events including: draft invitations, reserve venues, coordinate travel and reimbursement arrangements for overseas participants, prepare materials and handle all purchase orders
- Coordinate and facilitate weekly department meetings including preparation of minutes
- Format letters; handle mail; prepare travel and monthly expense reports, ,; serve as backup support for projects and/or traveling team members (mailings, organize materials for conferences, travel arrangements, etc.)
- Participate in internal meetings and provide other assistance to the department as requested
Duration of Internship
The internship may begin as soon as the position is filled. The intern will contribute 20 hours per week on a flexible schedule (during normal business hours) for approximately 10 weeks. The internship includes a small stipend.
Qualifications
This position requires a passion for international studies/development, women’s empowerment, or reproductive health; attention to detail, time management and organization skills; ability to multi-task and meet constantly changing demands in a fast paced environment; excellent communication and writing skills, including a professional phone presence; and proficiency in MS Office and internet navigation.

Research and Advocacy Database Intern
A Research and Advocacy Database Intern is being sought by Population Action International (PAI), an independent research and advocacy group working to strengthen support for international family planning. PAI strives to create a world in which every person has a right and access to sexual and reproductive health, humanity and the natural environment exist in balance, and fewer people live in poverty.
This internship will focus on updating data for four interactive Web-based databases on PAI’s website: The Shape of Things to Come, Global Advocates’ Toolbox, People in the Balance and ICPD: Where Are We Now?
Specific duties may include:
- Locating and utilizing a wide variety of global health, development and social indicators to update existing datasets;
- Performing data analysis of population age structures using Microsoft Excel;
- Writing text summarizing new data;
- Uploading new data to online databases using database management software.
Qualifications
- Interest in international development, gender equity and/or reproductive health;
- Strong research skills, preferably with a knowledge of international development and public health data;
- Careful attention to detail and dedication to accuracy;
- Ability to gather and organize quantitative and qualitative data;
- Excellent writing skills, particularly in synthesizing complex information;
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel;
- Knowledge of XML and/or mySQL or similar database management software a plus (coding knowledge not necessary).

Web Intern
Population Action International (PAI), an independent policy group working to make clear the linkages among population, reproductive health, the environment, and development, has an immediate opening for a qualified intern to work in the Department of Communications.
The Web Intern will work with PAI’s Online Outreach Associate to monitor and analyze web site statistics; assist with web site search engine optimization and using AdWords to promote PAI’s web site; update web site content and help to maintain PAI’s social networking sites. The Web Intern will also work closely with the Online Outreach Associate and Production Manager to redesign PAI’s web site.
Description of Responsibilities:
The intern’s scope of work may involve all or most of the following activities:
- Analyzing web site and social networking statistics
- Preparing monthly reports
- Creating / updating content on PAI’s web site
- Migrating content to new web site
- Creating and monitoring Google Ads
- Assisting with email outreach
- Creating/updating PAI’s pages/profiles on social networking sites
- Outreach/increasing PAI’s “friends” and/or “fans”
- Responding to messages/requests
- Other administrative duties as needed
Time
- Part time—20 hrs/week
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience with Google Analytics and Google Adwords
- Working knowledge of principles of search engine optimization and/or enthusiasm to learn
- Strong analytical and writing skills
- Knowledge of basic statistics desired but not required
- Experience using Facebook and Twitter and enthusiasm for social networking
- Knowledge of HTML desired but not required
- Self-starter with a sense of humor

Finance and Administration Intern
Background
Population Action International (PAI) works to improve individual well-being and preserve global resources by mobilizing political and financial support for population, family planning, and reproductive health policies and programs. PAI seeks one qualified intern to work in the Finance and Administration Department for the summer term. This internship is ideal for someone pursuing an undergraduate degree in finance or accounting.
Responsibilities
The Finance and Administration Intern will have an opportunity to work in a dynamic not-for-profit organization and gain focused, supportive training and professional experience in the field of finance & administration. Working closely with the F & A department staff, the intern will participate in providing a wide range of accounting and office services to support the activities of an energetic and dedicated staff of 38.
Description of Tasks
- Gain a basic understanding of a computerized accounting system and learn how to develop and use Excel spreadsheets
- Assist with the processing of cash receipts and vendor payables
- Assist in the development of a year-end forecast
- Perform general ledger account reconciliations
- Assist in processing of applicant resumes to support the human resource function
- Provide administrative support to meet reporting deadlines.
- Perform general administrative duties (filing, copying, etc.)

Qualifications
