Why a possible veto? It’s all because of a provision that exempts U.S.-donated contraceptives and condoms from the restrictions of the Global Gag Rule. Increase Your Gift and Save Taxes!

Think the only way to donate to a favorite charity is by giving cash? Think again! You may be able to increase your gift and save taxes by donating securities (stocks, bonds or mutual funds) instead of cash. In many cases, donating shares directly means that both the donor and the charity benefit from the transfer.

If you’ve held your securities for more than one year, you can donate them to your favorite charity and they can be deducted for income tax purposes at full market value. This option also allows you to avoid paying the capital gains tax and deduct the total value of your stock upon transfer (subject to IRS deduction limits). Keep in mind that if you sell the securities and donate the proceeds afterwards, you will create a taxable capital gain.

Be sure to always consult you tax expert before making any decisions regarding your securities. If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to contact our Development department at 202-557-3400.
