House Approves Crucial Improvements to Family Planning Policy; Senate is Up Next!

The last month on the Hill has been extremely exciting for PAI as we advocated for the three successful votes in the House of Representatives during debate of the fiscal year 2008 foreign assistance bill (H.R. 2764) – each yielding significant breakthroughs for the international family planning and reproductive health communities. This is just the beginning as these issues will be debated on the Senate floor next month. We encourage our readers to urge their Senators to approve these important, life-saving improvements to international reproductive health policy.

PAI Links Age Structure and the Failed States Index

Each year, Foreign Policy Magazine’s Failed States Index uses twelve political, economic, military and social indicators of instability to rank the states most likely to “fail.”  This year, PAI used data from its seminal publication The Shape of Things to Come: Why Age Structure Matters to a Safer, More Equitable World to add a new dimension to the Failed States Index: age structure. With this information, policy makers have yet another reason to promote sound reproductive health programs and educational and economic opportunities for women and girls.

PAI Partners with Global NGO Networks to Address Reproductive Health Supply Shortages

Shortages of critical reproductive health supplies around the world are undermining progress towards achieving international development goals. Without supplies, no health or poverty reduction program can be successful. To address this situation, PAI issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) in August 2006, seeking to work with global NGO networks who were interested in increasing their involvement in the RH supplies issue. As a result of this RFP, PAI is working with five partners to advance a common advocacy agenda for reproductive health supplies.

PAI's latest Research Commentary, Making Country Ownership a Reality: An NGO Perspective, outlines some of the key areas that could be the focus of new discussions and research.
