PAI Pledges Commitment and Action to Clinton Global Initiative

Washington, DC - September 26, 2005

Population Action International (PAI), represented by President & CEO Amy Coen, was among an esteemed group of world leaders, corporate executives, academics and civil society representatives in New York this month at the inaugural meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative.

A project of the William J. Clinton Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative is driven by four key issues: global poverty and the growing gap between rich and poor peoples; religion, conflict and reconciliation; climate change; and good governance, enterprise and investment. The New York conference – timed to coincide with the 2005 World Summit meeting at the United Nations – brought together some of the world’s most creative and keenest minds to discuss these issues, devise plans for addressing them, and pledge a specific commitment to action.

By the conference’s close, pledges to the Initiative totaled $1.25 billion in commitments and plans for action.

Among them, PAI pledged the following: “…to work to advance the key arguments on the benefits to be gained when governments make reproductive health and rights a development priority. By making a commitment to act on the critical linkage between reproductive health and the reduction of poverty, PAI joins its voice and energy with a broad audience of actors: from policy-makers within governments, to international agencies, to corporate leaders and professional associations, to charitable organizations and other non-profit institutions like PAI. Only a cross-sectoral and comprehensive response will yield the results that women and children deserve.”

Population Action International (PAI) works to improve individual well-being and preserve global resources by mobilizing political and financial support for population, family planning and reproductive health policies and programs.
